Ami I eligible to apply for SNAP in Indianapolis, Indiana

To qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), applicants must meet certain non-financial and financial requirements. Non-financial requirements include state residency, citizenship/alien status, work registration and cooperation with the IMPACT (job training) program. Financial criteria include income and asset limits.

The asset/resource limits are $2,250 per household except for households containing a member who is disabled or age 60 or older; then the limit is $3,250. Assets include bank accounts, cash, real estate, personal property, vehicles, etc. The household’s home and surrounding lot, household goods and personal belongings and life insurance policies are not counted as assets in the SNAP program for Indianapolis.

All households (except those with elderly or disabled members) must pass a gross income test (130 percent of poverty) to qualify for SNAP benefits. The gross income is per household size and based on the gross monthly income received by all household members. Click here for SNAP income limits.

Most households have to meet both gross and net income limits to qualify and apply for SNAP in Indianapolis Indiana. If everyone in your household receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or TANF (cash assistance), income limits do not apply.

Households with members who are elderly or disabled, as well as households which pass the gross income test, must also pass a net test to qualify. Elderly households are those which contain members age 60 or older. Disabled members are those who receive disability payments, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI), veteran’s disability, or Medicaid as a blind or disabled individual. If someone is already on a rental assistance program or wants to apply for Section 8 in Indianapolis Indiana, it does not affect their eligibility.

If the household has net income below the above amounts, and meets all other criteria, the SNAP allotment received is based on the household size and net monthly income. The maximum amount of SNAP received is also shown in the table above. Remember, families in need of housing assistance must complete a low income housing application at their local housing authority, not the USDA.

Please note that this is the maximum amount a household will receive based on $0 income. The greater the household’s net income, a lesser amount of SNAP benefits will be received.

Does applying for Section 8 rental assistance affect my SNAP status?

No. Applying for SNAP or Food Stamps, which is the same thing, does not have anything to do with the application process for the USDA. If you want to complete a Section 8 application for Indiana, then you must find a housing authority that is accepting applications. Most PHA’s have to keep their Section 8 waiting list closed because of overwhelming applicants.
