How do I apply for Food Stamps in Chicago Illinois?

To apply for benefits, or for information about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, contact your local SNAP office. You can find local offices and each State’s application on our national map. Local offices are also listed in the State or local government pages of the telephone book. The office should be listed under “Food Stamps,” “Social Services,” “Human Services,” “Public Assistance,” or a similar title. You can also call your State’s SNAP hotline number. Most are toll-free numbers. The application process is completely free. To find a low income housing application, housing authorities must be accepting applications. The housing authority is an unrelated branch.

Please don’t call the FNS headquarters to apply. The State and county offices do that. And we don’t have application forms. Each State has its own application form. If your State‚Äôs form is not on the web yet, you’ll need to contact your local SNAP office to request one. Section 8 rental assistance programs do not have any connection with your local SNAP office.

There are several ways to apply for Food Stamps in Chicago Illinois, cash, SNAP (formerly Food Stamps), and Medical Assistance.

When I apply for Section 8 in Chicago, did I apply for Food Stamps too?

No. They are entirely different departments.

What is the purpose of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)?

Illinois Link Card – The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (formerly Food Stamps) helps low-income people and families buy the food they need for good health.

Benefits are provided on the Illinois Link Card – an electronic card that is accepted at most grocery stores. The program is managed by the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) of the United States Department of Agriculture. The Department of Human Services administers the program in Illinois. Remember, a Section 8 application for Chicago does not automatically submit application for SNAP or Food Stamps.

Who can receive these services?

The housing authority is only responsible for administering the section 8 and public housing programs. They also help tenants to locate housing and provide information to become a section 8 landlord.

Most households with low income can get SNAP benefits. The rules are complex, so all of the details are not here. The most important factors which determine the amount of, and eligibility for, SNAP benefits are: income and expenses; the number of persons who live and eat together

Your application must be reviewed by IDHS staff at the Family Community Resource Center. If you apply for benefits and are eligible, you will receive a notice of your eligibility.
